Angel Food Salad | Easy Light Summer Potluck Dessert

Angel Food Salad is a special recipe that dates back to flight school years. I had a dear friend who had just had her second kiddo as I had just had our twins. She made this for one of our first “play dates”, which to be honest, with that many newborns, it was more of an adult play date. But one we both needed more than we realized.
Since then I’ve made with different variations from a last minute dinner date to Backyard BBQ parties and even was featured at our twins first birthday party.
Since then, this Angel Food Salad has shown up at everything from last-minute dinner dates to backyard BBQs. It’s light, fluffy, and features bright, fruity, and refreshing flavors. It feels indulgent without being heavy
The beauty of this recipe is how versatile it is. My personal favorite combinations would are Strawberry – Blueberry, Triple Berry, Strawberry – Kiwi, and Cranberry – Strawberry (when cranberries are in season). Whether you call it a dessert salad or a strawberry trifle, it always disappears fast!

Why You’ll Love This Angel Food Cake Salad
- Super light and fluffy — very summer feeling
- Make-ahead friendly (actually tastes better after chilling)
- Perfect Summer Potluck Dessert — travels beautifully and serves a crowd
- Customizable with your favorite fresh fruits
- Kid-friendly and adult-approved
Ingredients (Serves 8 – 12)
- 1 whole angel food cake (about 10–12 oz), cut into 1-inch bite-size cubes
- 1 (12 oz) container Cool Whip, thawed
- 1 box (3.4 oz) Jello no-bake cheesecake mix (prepare as directed — you won’t use the crust packet) or 1 tub of premade Philadelphia no-bake cheesecake filling
- 4–6 cups fresh fruit (see favorite combos below)
- Optional garnishes: extra berries, fresh mint, or a light dusting of powdered sugar
- Favorite Fruit Combinations
- Strawberry + Blueberry (classic and beautiful)
- Triple Berry (strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries or blackberries)
- Strawberry + Kiwi (bright and tropical)
- Cranberry + Strawberry (festive and tart-sweet)
Instructions:
- In a large bowl, gently fold the angel food cake cubes into the thawed Cool Whip until the cubes are evenly coated. This helps keep the cake from getting soggy.
- Prepare the cheesecake pudding according to the package directions (using cold milk). If using premade cheesecake filling, skip this step.
- In a large trifle bowl or clear glass serving bowl, begin layering:
- Start with about ⅓ of the angel food cake + Cool Whip mixture
- Add about ⅓ of the cheesecake filling
- Top with about ⅓ of the fresh fruit Repeat the layers at least one more time (or until you run out), finishing with a pretty layer of fruit on top.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 2–4 hours.

Tips for the Best Angel Food Salad
- Fruit tips: Use ripe but firm fruit. Pat berries dry if they’re very juicy to prevent excess liquid. For a true Strawberry Trifle look, go heavy on the strawberries.
- Cake shortcut: Store-bought angel food cake works perfectly and saves time. Homemade is wonderful if you have it!
- Cheesecake layer shortcut: Premade no-bake cheesecake filling makes this recipe even faster.
- Storage: Leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for up to 2 days (though the cake will soften more over time).
