Chicken Foil Packs: 6 Easy Campfire & Grill Recipes for Summer

Just Because You’re Camping Doesn’t Mean You Have to Eat Poorly.
There is a time and a place for a hot dog on a stick. We have all been there and we are not here to judge it.
But if you have a cooler, a roll of heavy-duty foil, and about ten minutes of prep time before you leave the house, you can do so much better — and clean up will be just as easy. These chicken foil pack recipes are our go-to for camping trips, RV weekends, beach cookouts, and backyard summer grilling. They are built on one simple idea: layer everything into a foil packet, seal it up, throw it over the fire or on the grill, and let the heat do the work while you enjoy the outdoors.
No pots. No pans. No dishes. Everyone opens their own packet right on their plate, and cleanup is a matter of balling up the foil and tossing it.
We have six different varieties below — different enough that you can make one a night for nearly a week on a camping trip and never feel like you are repeating yourself. Each one follows the same technique. You just change what goes inside.
Why Foil Packs Are the Ultimate Camping and Grilling Meal
Chicken foil packs — sometimes called campfire packets, hobo packs, or foil dinners — have been a camping staple for generations, and for good reason. Everything steams inside the sealed packet, which means chicken that goes in comes out moist and fully cooked, surrounded by tender vegetables that have absorbed all the flavor of the sauce or seasoning right along with it.
The technique works over a campfire, on a charcoal grill, on a gas grill, or even in a home oven at 400°F when the camping trip is over and you just want an easy weeknight dinner. We genuinely make these at home all summer long — not just at the campsite.
Foil Pack Tips That Make All the Difference
Before you get to the six recipes, a few techniques are worth knowing. These make the difference between a soggy foil pack and a perfectly cooked one.
Always use heavy-duty foil. Standard foil tears too easily when you are moving the packets around over a fire. Heavy-duty foil gives you the structural integrity to flip and move the packs without losing everything inside.
Always double wrap. Use two sheets of foil for every packet — the first sheet holds the ingredients and the second sheet wraps around the outside for extra strength and insulation. This is the single most important tip for foil pack cooking.
Spray the foil with cooking spray. Before you add a single ingredient, hit the inside of your foil with a quick spray of cooking spray. This prevents sticking and makes opening the packet a much cleaner experience.
Layer strategically. Denser, slower-cooking items like chicken strips go on the bottom closest to the heat. Softer vegetables and toppings like cheese and herbs go on top.
Do not crowd the packet. Leave a little room inside the packet when you seal it. The steam needs space to circulate and cook everything evenly. A tightly packed foil bundle will cook unevenly.
Seal tightly. Bring the long sides of the foil up and together, fold them down toward the food in a series of small folds, then fold in the ends. A good seal keeps the steam — and the flavor — inside.
Check the temperature, not the clock. Campfires vary enormously in heat output. Always use an instant-read thermometer to confirm chicken has reached 165°F internally before serving. This is non-negotiable for food safety.
Prep at home, cook at camp. You can assemble all six foil packs at home before you leave, store them in a cooler, and simply pull them out and put them over the fire when you are ready. This is the move for anyone who wants maximum ease at the campsite.
The Six Chicken Foil Pack Recipes
All six recipes follow the same method:
- Lay out two sheets of heavy-duty foil, spray the inside with cooking spray.
- Layer your ingredients on the foil with chicken strips on the bottom.
- Double wrap, sealing tightly.
- Cook over medium campfire heat or on a grill over medium-high heat until chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F — approximately 20–30 minutes depending on your fire. Flip once halfway through.
- Carefully open the packet (steam will escape — open away from your face), serve on a paper plate, and enjoy.
1. Chicken Bacon Ranch Foil Packs
The crowd-pleaser. Every campsite has at least one person who lights up when they hear the words “chicken bacon ranch” — and this one delivers exactly what that promise implies.
Ingredients:
- Chicken breasts, sliced into strips
- Bacon, sliced
- Broccoli florets
- Ranch dressing
- Shredded cheese
- Green onions, sliced

To assemble: Layer chicken strips on the prepared foil. Add bacon slices and broccoli. Drizzle ranch dressing generously over the top. Seal the packet and cook until chicken reaches 165°F. Open, top with shredded cheese and green onions, and let the heat melt the cheese before serving.

2. Cilantro Lime Chicken Foil Packs
Fresh, bright, and light — this one tastes like summer in every bite. The lime juice steams inside the packet and permeates everything with citrus flavor, while the cumin adds a gentle warmth that keeps it interesting.
Ingredients:
- Chicken breasts, sliced into strips
- Fresh cilantro
- Fresh limes, sliced
- Ground cumin
- Corn (fresh off the cob or frozen)

To assemble: Layer chicken strips on the prepared foil. Add corn and sliced limes directly on top of the chicken. Sprinkle generously with ground cumin. Add a handful of fresh cilantro. Seal and cook until chicken reaches 165°F. Squeeze any remaining fresh lime juice over the top when serving.
Serving suggestion: These pair beautifully with tortillas warmed over the fire, black beans, and a little sour cream for a campfire taco night.

3. Honey Mustard Chicken Foil Packs
Sweet, tangy, and with just a little heat from the red pepper flakes — this is the foil pack for people who want something a little more complex than the classics. Honey mustard and chicken is a combination that has stood the test of time for a reason.
Ingredients:
- Chicken breasts, sliced into strips
- Honey
- Grainy mustard
- Red pepper flakes
- Zucchini, sliced

To assemble: In a small bowl or zip-top bag, mix honey and grainy mustard together in roughly equal parts. Layer chicken strips on the prepared foil. Add sliced zucchini. Pour the honey mustard mixture over everything. Sprinkle with red pepper flakes to taste. Seal and cook until chicken reaches 165°F.
Note: The honey caramelizes slightly inside the sealed packet, giving the chicken a gorgeous golden color when you open it up.

4. Pesto Caprese Chicken Foil Packs
This one feels like a restaurant plate that somehow ended up on a campfire. Pesto, fresh mozzarella, ripe tomato, and basil are a combination that does not need much help — and the foil pack format lets every flavor meld together beautifully.
Ingredients:
- Chicken breasts, sliced into strips
- Pesto (store-bought is perfectly fine here)
- Fresh mozzarella, sliced
- Tomato, sliced
- Fresh basil

To assemble: Layer chicken strips on the prepared foil. Spread pesto generously over the chicken. Layer mozzarella slices and tomato slices on top. Add fresh basil. Seal and cook until chicken reaches 165°F. The mozzarella will be melted and bubbling when you open the packet.
Serving suggestion: Serve alongside naan or a crusty bread warmed over the fire to scoop up any pesto and melted mozzarella left in the packet.

5. Santa Fe Chicken Foil Packs
The most complete meal of the six — Mexican rice, black beans, corn, bell peppers, and salsa all go in together with the chicken, making this a full dinner in a single packet that needs nothing else alongside it.
Ingredients:
- Chicken breasts, sliced into strips
- Black beans, drained and rinsed
- Corn
- Bell peppers, diced
- Salsa
- Shredded cheese
- Mexican rice, already cooked

To assemble: Layer chicken strips on the prepared foil first. Add a scoop of cooked Mexican rice alongside the chicken. Top with black beans, corn, and diced bell peppers. Spoon salsa over everything. Seal and cook until chicken reaches 165°F. Open and top with shredded cheese — the residual heat will melt it quickly.
Tip: This is the foil pack to pre-cook the rice for at home. Prepared rice packs into the cooler beautifully and makes assembly at camp completely effortless.

6. Sweet Teriyaki Chicken Foil Packs
Teriyaki sauce caramelizes inside the sealed packet in a way that is genuinely spectacular — the chicken comes out glazed, sweet, and savory all at once, and the broccoli soaks up the teriyaki in a way that makes even the vegetable part of the packet disappear fast.
Ingredients:
- Chicken breasts, sliced into strips
- Teriyaki sauce
- Red bell pepper, sliced into strips
- Sesame seeds
- Broccoli florets

To assemble: Layer chicken strips on the prepared foil. Add broccoli florets and red bell pepper strips. Pour teriyaki sauce generously over everything. Sprinkle with sesame seeds. Seal and cook until chicken reaches 165°F.
Serving suggestion: Serve over instant white rice prepared at camp, or bring pre-cooked rice from home. The teriyaki sauce pools at the bottom of the packet and makes a perfect quick sauce over rice.

Making Foil Packs at Home (Not Just for Camping)
We want to say this clearly: you do not need to be camping to make these. We make chicken foil packs on our backyard grill all summer long because the cleanup is nearly nonexistent and the flavor is genuinely great. They also work in a home oven at 400°F for 25–30 minutes — perfect for a busy weeknight when you want a complete dinner with minimal effort and zero dishes.
They are also an excellent option for feeding a crowd at a block party or 4th of July cookout — prep everything in advance, label the packets with a marker so everyone gets their preferred flavor, and cook them all at once over the grill.
