The Houston’s Irish Wake

Our first Irish Wake ever was down in Pensacola, FL back in 2009 at McGuire’s Irish Pub. We were surprised that when we ordered one that it came out in a mason jar and that we were told that legally they were only allowed to serve two per customer. After finishing our first drink there was no way we were ordering a second one as they came with quite a punch and we still had to drive back to our hotel.

Loving the idea of this Irish drink we decided to tweak it to our liking just a bit. The Original drink is to be made in a mason just but we’ve included a version below that only makes a normal sized drink with less punch to it. I hope that our Irish Wake brings some extra fun and joy to your Saint Patrick’s day or any other day you’re feeling a little Irish. But be careful as these taste like juice and sneak up on you pretty quick.

ingredients for Irish wake

For the big mason jar:

  • 3 oz Sailor Jerry’s Spiced Rum
  • 1 1/2 oz Absolute Vodka
  • 1 oz Triple Sec (any cheap stuff will do)
  • 1 oz Blue Curacao (any cheap stuff will do)
  • 1 oz Lemon Juice
  • 1/2 Tbsp or so sugar
  • Top off with OJ and ice

Pour all ingredients into jar (should be a dark green when done) then add Simply Orange pulp free OJ almost to the neck of the jar (or when the color turns a nice sherbet ice cream green) .  Top off with ice.

Any other types of rum, vodka, and OJ can be used to make the drink.  These though are preferred because Sailor Jerry’s has more cane syrup then other rums so it tastes sweeter.  Absolute has no taste, so it doesn’t change the drink And Simply Orange just tastes the best.
