Nathan and I created Afternoon Lemonade one summer afternoon while sipping frozen Hemmingway daiquiris. We had sadly discovered that we were running low on grapefruit and limes. Being in a crafty spirit (get it?) and having plenty of lemons on hand, Nathan and I decided to come up with a lemon-flavored cocktail using that same old-world ingredient that was in our daiquiris: Luxardo Maraschino liqueur.
No, it is not in any way related to the bright red cherries that are on top of ice cream Sundays.

Luxardo is an Italian liqueur that is made from the Marasca cherry and has existed much longer than those little neon garnishes. The liqueur itself has a very distinct unique taste and pairs very well with fruit based drinks. Luxardo Maraschino liqueur is sweet and thick upfront, with a subtle nuttiness like almonds, finishing with bright, shiny cherries. There are no substitutions and nothing like it in this world.

Afternoon Lemonade is best served Ice cold and has flavors of sweet, tart lemon, with the distinct taste of Luxardo cherries, this cocktail has been known to deplete our supply of lemons rather quickly. Ours uses London dry gin as the alcohol, but substituting white rum has also worked out very well. Gin just adds on another layer of flavors that pair perfectly with Luxardo.
